Biography Oliver Sykes
Oliver Sykes Scott (born November 20, 1986) is a
British singer known as
vocalist of the British metal band Bring Me the
Horizon. It is also known for
its clothing line, Drop Dead Clothing, known
worldwide and aboard, and is
one of the most popular lines of alternative
clothing among
the "Scene" community.
early life
Oliver Sykes was born November 20, 1986, in
Ashford, Kent. He moved
to Australia with his parents Ian and Carol Sykes
when he was young,
moving between Adelaide and Perth for about five
years. He then moved
back to England at the age of eight to Stocksbridge, Sheffield. As a
teenager, he attended Stocksbridge High School, the same
school where
Arctic Monkeys band members Alex Turner, Andy
Nicholson, Matt Helders
and Nick O'Malley attended. He is the year under
Turner and Helders.
Sykes has stated that he enjoys English and Arts
subjects while in
high school, but is not interested in any science
or math. While at
school in 2003 he began crafting along compilation
CDs and short tracks
under the name Quakebeat. He also played in other bands, including the
hip hop band mock "Rahim 2 Da Tomb" with
fellow Bring Me the Horizon
member Matt Nicholls and brother Tom Sykes, and the
metal band
"Purple Curto" as drummer / vocalist with
schoolfriend Neil Whiteley,
under the pseudonym "Olisaurus", which
will then be used to release
solo material.
Oliver Sykes is not only a lyricist, but has also
been seen as a great
contributor to the songwriting process of Bring Me
The Horizon.
Sykes' lyrics have a strong
feeling of catharsis for him because he is
especially interesting from
personal experience and has likened the band's live
performances to
become theraputic. Typically, the process of writing a band
involves Sykes
writing the main structure of the song and then
leading individual guitarist
Lee Malia would write the main riff. From this they will
collaborate with each
other to structure their work better and then to
then insert the rest of the
band in writing throughout the song. He explained
the Plan of Dillinger
Escape and Every Time I Die as a significant
influence on his writing in the
early Bring Me the Horizons work saying "they
may be two bands that once
influenced our band more than anyone in
the world." While quoting Pink Floyd
and Orange Goblin as a significant influence on
later songwriting.
Clothes line
In addition to vocal contributions and songwriting
in the band
Bring Me the Horizon, Oliver Sykes is also the
founder and owner of
Apparel clothing line Drop Dead
alternatives. Drop Dead Apparel is one of the most
popular alternative
clothing and accessories lines in the world,
catering for men and
women, and ships worldwide. Controversy
Nottingham incident
While on tour in the UK, Sykes made the accusation
that urinated on
a female fan after a show at Nottingham Rock City.
He was later prosecuted,
but all charges were later canceled due to lack of
evidence. Online music
zine Drowned in Sound claimed that Bring Me the
Horizon was banned
from Nottingham Rock City, a claim that turned out to be false when the
band later played Nottingham Rock City on December
1, 2007.
Video with Architects
During the tour, Bring Me the Horizon and
Architects filmed a video showing
a gradual fight between Sykes and Architect's
vocalist Sam Carter.
The videos are uploaded to YouTube and resulted in
outraging many
Bring Me the Horizon fans, believing it was real.
It caused a lot to
send hate mail against Carter, who then stated
clearly in
an interview with Kerrang! that everything is a
joke, as Sykes did
